Presenter: James-Gerard Powers Location: London Audience: All Adult Attendees
Yoga for the Body and Heart! Many of us are tight and stressed not only from traveling hundreds of miles, but also from the daily challenges of life. Starting your day with yoga is a beautiful way to renew yourself and create inner clarity for a conference day full of ideas and emotions. This yoga class is for all levels of fitness and is geared only for adults. Wear comfortable clothes and bring a towel or yoga mat. Space is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
*Yoga will also be offered on Saturday, April 18, 2009 from 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM. |

Small Group Discussion Sessions (Adoptees Only) |
| |
In the past, small group discussions at the large Gatherings as well as mini-gatherings have been some of the most popular and well-received sessions. Many attendees felt that they made meaningful connections through honest conversations about how being adopted affects identity, race/ethnicity, relationships, and everything in-between.
Usually, these small groups were divided up according to age (e.g. ages 25 and under, 26-35, etc.). This time, however, you will join a discussion group based on the first time that you, as an adult* yourself, experienced or became involved with the adult adoptee community. There will be three groups:
Pre-2000 Facilitators: Andrew Beil and Lotte Choon Ran Location: KAAGNY Audience: Adoptees who experienced or became involved with the adult adoptee community for the first time before the year 2000.
2001-2005 Facilitators: Sarah Kim Randolph and Sonya Wilson Location: London Audience: Adoptees who experienced or became involved with the adult adoptee community for the first time from 2000 to 2005.
2006-Present Facilitators: Allen Majors and Juli Martin Location: Zurich Audience: Adoptees who experienced or became involved with the adult adoptee community for the first time from 2006 to present.
While age is clear-cut (for the most part!), this type of break-out may be more ambiguous. Here are some suggestions of what could be considered “experience with the adult adoptee community”:
- Attending an activity sponsored by any adult adoptee organization (e.g. Also-Known-As, AAAW, AK Connection, GOA’L, etc.)
- Attending an adoptee conference, mini-gathering, or one of the larger Gatherings (D.C., Norway, or Seoul [’04 or ‘07])
- Volunteering as an adult counselor/staff member for an adoptee heritage camp
- Actively participating in adoptee-centered online forums, chat rooms, or websites
- Traveling with other adult adoptees on any kind of “motherland” tour to Korea
- Participating in a “camp” or cultural program for adult adoptees (either in your adoptive country or in Korea)
- Casual, social dinners or parties where a significant number of the attendees are adult adoptees
It may take some self-reflection to determine which break-out group you’ll go to, and we hope this generates some lively discussions!
**We’re choosing to define “adult” as 18 or older, so for example, attending a heritage camp as a child wouldn’t be considered here as “involvement with the adult adoptee community." |

A Look Today at the Lives of Unwed Korean Mothers: Where We Are and Where We Need to Go |
| |
Presenters: Kimberly Hee Stock and Dr. Richard Boas Location: London Audience: All Attendees
This workshop will help the audience gain a better understanding of what life is currently like in Korea for a single mother. Many of the same ongoing hardships and discrimination exist for these mothers and their children, yet there is also a growing movement of change and progress of support. This workshop will offer a unique look into both the personal and general struggles of these mothers, as well as address what impact support organizations have given these Korean families. An extensive question-and-answer session will conclude the presentation with the hope of opening up dialogue on this important issue.
